Day Trek to Prabalgad Fort

The Twin of Kalavantin

Located at an altitude of 2300 ft above sea level Prabalgad ( Fort ) offers captivating view of the Western Ghats. The fort was previously known as Muranjan until it was taken over and renamed by the Maratha forces under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's rule. Built by the Bahmani Sultanate, this massive fort has witnessed the rise and fall of powerful kingdoms, such as the Marathas and the Mughals. Learning about the tales of bravery surrounding this fort would be an awe-inspiring experience. The Prabalgad fort, which has seen one ruler after another fight for its possession, now sits peacefully in ruins, reclaimed by nature.

  • The fort was built to keep an eye on the forts of Kalyan and Panvel
  • It is said that when the British developed Matheran as a hill station, Prabalgad was also under consideration!
  • Around 1458 A.D, "Malik Ahmad" the prime minister of the kingdom of Ahmednagar, took over the fort during his conquest of Konkan
  • Chhatrapati Shivaji conquered the fort from the Mughals in 1657 A.D, after which he established himself in the Kalyan-Bhivandi area
