Peth Fort, also known as Kothligad Fort is sits at a height of about 1500 feet in the Karjat region of Sahayadri Hills. The fort is easily recognised by its compact, thumb-shaped pinnacle rising above the Peth plateau. Unlike larger forts with extensive palace ruins, Kothaligad is best known for its unusual rock-cut architecture, cave chambers, water cisterns, surviving cannons and a narrow staircase carved through the inside of the pinnacle.

This fort was primarily used as a watchtower & ammunition depot by the ruling armies. The strategic location of the hill provides a commanding view of Padargad, Malanggad, Siddhagad, Chanderi fort, Bhimashankar & Matheran plateau.

The trek starts from Ambivli and gradually climbs through a short stretch of tar road followed by broad mud track. You will witness monsoon waterfalls and walk through paddy fields before reaching Peth Gaon- a tiny hamlet at the base of the fort. The final section beyond this village becomes steeper and includes rocky terrain, carved steps, caves and the enclosed staircase leading to the summit.

The trek is of moderate difficulty level, ideal for both beginners and experienced hikers. The trek is about 4 kms and typically takes 2.5 to 3 hours to reach the summit at an easy pace. While manageable, the trek may be challenging for those with lower fitness levels.
